Laureus brings people together through sport – through Laureus Sport for Good, the Laureus World Sports Academy and the Laureus World Sports Awards.


The words of the first Laureus Patron, Nelson Mandela are at the heart of the Laureus mission:


“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.”


Since 2000, those words have inspired a powerful movement. Laureus Sport for Good supports over 160 programmes in 40 countries, addressing social issues such as HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, crime, social exclusion, violence and discrimination. Through sport, these projects have helped to improve the lives of more than one-and-a-half million young people.


Laureus Sport for Good is supported by the Laureus World Sports Academy – 66 global icons of sport who volunteer their time to support Laureus-supported projects. The Academy members come from multiple sports, across the world. What they share is a passionate belief in the power of sport to break down barriers and improve the lives of young people. As well as their support for Sport for Good, the Academy members also have the responsibility for voting to decide the winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards.


The Laureus World Sports Awards take place every year, celebrating the best of the previous year’s sporting success. Nominated by the world’s media, the final decision is made by the ultimate sports jury – the members of the Laureus World Sports Academy across several categories, including Sportsman, Sportswoman, Team, Breakthrough and Comeback of the year. The Ceremony is attended by global figures from the worlds of sport and entertainment and broadcast around the world.
